This pilot had 45,000 flight hours, including 4,300 as a command officer, and was (til Saturday) a Major General in the United States Air Force.
He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with "V" device, the Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit and a Army Commendation Medal and has was the current Commandant of The Eisenhower School at the National Defense University and Commandant of at Industrial College of the Armed Forces.
He just crashed his Cessna.
On take-off, in rural Virginia, killing him, his wife and dog.
Why was he flying to Washington and who killed him...?!
In contrast:
"Hani Hanjour began making cross-country flights in August to test security, and tried to rent a plane from Freeway Airport in Maryland; though he was declined after exhibiting difficulty controlling and landing a single-engine Cessna 172"
